India.Arie
Testimony Volume 1
Universal Motown Records
With India.Arie’s third album out now, the songbird is not only sporting a new look (i.e. The Bald Head and form fitting wardrobe) but on Testimony, Vol. 1: Life & Relationship, and you’ll notice she’s exploring a new sound too.
At 16 tracks long, she continues to have a heavily acoustic sound with pretty melodies and highly moral lyrics. In songs like "I am not my hair" and "Better People", it is obvious that India is trying out new sounds and moving to a more "Fun" approach to her music. Using more upbeat rhythms, the seemingly more open and exposed India displays change and growth as an artist. However, while the old India.Arie tracks were very soulful, her new work seems to sound more like a soundtrack to a Disney movie.
The music and its lyrics appear to be aimed more toward a younger audience of little girls to send them a message of self love and worth. I wouldn’t recommend this album to your average adult because of its undeniable cheese factor. Hopefully we can look forward to a more adult sound on Volume 2.
